India is a market that's exploding in popularity, especially when it comes to more budget-oriented devices. It's a country that as a whole is less receptive to $1,000 flagships so companies like OnePlus and Xiaomi have amassed large followings with high powered, budget smartphones.
Xiaomi has announced a new device called the Redmi Go, featuring Android 8.1 Oreo Go Edition. It features a 5-inch display with a 720p resolution, a Snapdragon 425 processor, 1GB of RAM, a choice of 8GB or 16GB of storage with a microSD slot, an 8MP rear camera, a 5MP front camera, and a 3,000 mAh battery. It lacks features like Bluetooth 5.0 (or even 4.2), WiFi ac, 4K video, and even fast charging but makes up for it in dual SIM capability and price.
They key to this device is that it costs ₹4,499, or a mere $65 USD. Bringing a smartphone with such decent specs down to $65 is a pretty amazing feat and will aid in bringing smartphone technology and connectivity to many more people. Such a price isn't exactly a rarity for smartphones, but anything under $100 is usually reviewed by "how terrible is it?" rather than by its merits.
Leave it to Xiaomi to make a decent phone at $65, though this means it will likely never come to the US. We have high hopes for the device at least performing decently, even if the camera is likely awful and the 1GB of RAM will hold it back in multitasking. The addition of Android Go is nice though, as it'll help performance in the long run.
