HTC still hasn’t given up: 5G smartphone in the works

In the past month or so, we've seen new smartphones from the likes of Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, LG, and even Sony who many feel could be on the cusp of exiting the smartphone market. Missing from that list is HTC, who has in the previous years never failed to announce a new flagship phone or two.

So what gives? Has the company given up yet?

According to famed and reliable leakster Evan Blass, that is not the case. Blass recently tweeted in response to another tweet that linked to a recent article about how Sony is looking to merge its consumer electronic divisions after losing billions of dollars on mobile.

The tweet in question seemed to suggest that HTC and Sony could be in the same boat, although according to Blass, that might not necessarily be the case as HTC could be working on something new in the form of a 5G smartphone with the model number 2Q6U. Apart from the model number, not much is known about the handset for now, besides the fact that it will support 5G.

We suppose this is to be expected since 5G networks will begin rolling out this year in earnest, and we've already seen a few companies announce their plans to launch 5G compatible devices, so it's not surprising that HTC could want in on the action as well.

The last flagship smartphone we saw from HTC was the HTC U12+ which was launched around May 2018, so it does feel like a new phone from the company is due.
