OnePlus 6 versus OnePlus 6T: which should you buy?

When a brand releases a new smartphone, the newest device is typically the one you should buy. It usually features better specs, a new design, and features that the only one won't have. But that's not necessarily the case with the new OnePlus 6T. The new flagship smartphone from OnePlus is basically a OnePlus 6 with a few minor tweaks that's accompanied by a higher base price. While the higher price is justified by the fact that the phone's base model comes with 128GB of RAM, an in-display fingerprint sensor and a smaller notch at the top of the display, there are a few drawbacks.

Unlike the OnePlus 6, the new OnePlus 6T does not have a 3.5mm headphone jack. Over the years, OnePlus has used the 3.5mm headphone jack as a key selling point for its phones, mocking Apple for removing it from its iPhones and ridiculing every Android OEM that has followed in Apple's footprints. Of course, OnePlus has justified the omission of the 3.5mm headphone jack by claiming that most users now rely on Bluetooth headphone to listen to their music and that the extra space was needed to fit a larger battery into the phone.

And then there's the in-display fingerprint sensor which replaces the rear-mounter sensor of the OnePlus 6. While this technology is new and exciting, it also doesn't perform as well as a regular fingerprint sensor does. Those who have used the new OnePlus 6T claim that the in-display sensor isn't as reliable as the one on the OnePlus 6 and often forces users to scan their fingerprint 2-3 times before it unlocks the device.

So, is the OnePlus 6T the right device for you? In most cases, we typically suggest the newer device, but we're not sure if that's the right call this time around. While the new OnePlus 6T may have a cooler-looking notch and larger battery, the 3.5mm headphone jack and rear-mounted fingerprint sensor on the OnePlus 6 are compelling reasons why you might want to buy that phone instead.

Which of these two phones would you rather own?

OnePlus 6T, a small upgrade to an already amazing smartphone

October has been a busy month if you've been keeping a close eye on all the new smartphones that have been announced. The new OnPlus 6T may be the last new device we see this month, it's also one of the most compelling. All the basics of the OnePlus 6T are the same as the original OnePlus 6. The phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, you get 6 or 8GB of RAM, 128 or 256GB of storage, a 6.4-inch display and the same 16MP/20MP dual camera and 16MP front-facing camera that you get on the standard OnePlus 6.

But there are a few differences as well. The most noticeable is the lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack. OnePlus has switched over to audio over USB-C, but the company claims to have a good reason. The port was removed to make room for a new 3,700 mAh battery which is 12% larger (I don't think anyone will be complaining about that) and to allow the display's bottom bezels to be reduced even further. OnePlus has also reduced the size of the notch on the top of the display, making it one of the best-looking notches we've seen to date. The final tweak is the new in-display fingerprint sensor which replaces the rear-mounted sensor on the OnePlus 6. Unfortunately, the phone doesn't have an official IP dust and water resistance rating and wireless charging is nowhere to be found.

Naturally, all these minor tweaks are also accompanied by a bump in price. The base model OnePlus 6T with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage costs $549. While that's lower than pretty much any other flagship device on the market, it is $20 more than the OnePlus 6. If you want 8GB of RAM with the same amount of storage, you'll pay $579 and 256GB of storage with 8GB of RAM will cost you $629.

The OnePlus 6T goes on sale November 1 through the company's website, but US customers will also be able to purchase the phone directly from T-Mobile. OnePlus has sold its phone through several service providers in Europe on the past, but this is the first time that it has managed to snag support from a US service provider. T-Mobile is also throwing in a $300 discount if you trade in any OnePlus smartphone when you purchase the OnePlus 6T.

What's your take on the new OnePlus 6T?

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 has 10GB of RAM and hides its selfie cam behind the display

Ever since the original Xaoimi Mi Mix was introduced about two years ago, Xiaomi has used the line smartphones to usher in new technology and design concepts. If you're looking for a smartphone with futuristic characteristics, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 will definitely fit the bill. Unveiled today in China, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 is dominated by its edge-to-edge 6.39-inch 2,340 x 1,080 AMOLED display. Unlike previous Xiaomi Mi Mix devices, the Mi Mix 3 has done away with the bottom chin which was previously used to house the front-facing camera and other sensors. But the phone still has a front-facing camera which is revealed by sliding the screen down. That's right, Xiaomi's Mi Mix 3 is a slider phone. Xiaomi claims that the magnetically assisted sliding mechanism should hold up just fine for more than 300k slides.

The phone's other specs include a Snapdragon 845 SoC, 6/8GB of RAM, 128/256GB of storage and a 3200mAH battery. Xiaomi is also planning a special edition variant of the phone which will come out in November with 10GB of RAM which could be the first device to hit the market with 10GB of RAM. The main camera on the back sports two sensors, a 12 MP sensor with an f/1.8 lens with 4-axis OIS and a second 12MP sensor with an f/2.4 telephoto lens. Up front, you also get a 24MP camera that's paired with a 2MP depth sensor so that you can capture portrait-style selfies as well. As you'd expect, sliding the screen down to reveal the front-facing camera will automatically launch the camera app in selfie mode.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 will be available black, sapphire blue or jade green, all featuring a metal frame and ceramic back panel. While the phone could easily go head-to-head with most other $1,000 Android smartphones, the base model of the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 with 6BG of RAM and 128GB of storage is quite affordable at 3,299 yuan ($475 USD). If you want 8GB RAM with 256GB storage, you'll be asked to pay 3,999 yuan ($580 USD) and then there's the special edition model with 10GB of RAM which will set you back 4,999 yuan ($720 USD).

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 will go on sale in Asia and select markets in Europe in the coming weeks. Xiaomi isn't planning to officially sell the Mi Mix 3 in the US, but you should be able to import it from GearBest and other sites sometime in November.

Pixel 3 versus LG G7: camera comparison

A few days ago, we shared quite a few sample photos that we'd captured with the Pixel 3. The images showed off what the cameras on the phone are capable of, but it's hard to know how good something is without a bit of context.

Today, we're sharing images and video from the Pixel 3 and comparing them to what you'd get with the LG G7. The Pixel 3 and LG G7 both have unique hardware – an ultra-wide selfie camera on the Pixel 3 and an ultra-wide main camera on the LG G7. As you'll see in the samples and videos below, having an ultra-wide lens does make a big difference when framing your shots.

Let us know what your take is on the Pixel 3 versus LG G7 photo and video comparison. For reference, the images on the left are captures with the Pixel 3 and those on the right are taken with the LG G7. And if you're into Pixel peeping, you can also download the full-resolution images captured by the LG G7 and Pixel 3.
