Back in the early days of the smartphone, companies were still trying to figure out what works and what didn't. Then companies such as HTC and LG thought that maybe glasses-free 3D smartphones could be a good idea (to a certain extent it was, it helped introduce the world to dual camera smartphones).
Unfortunately, the idea never quite took off the way they had hoped and glasses-free 3D phones died a quiet death. Now fast forward a few years later, a company by the name of ROKiT has decided that maybe it's time to revive the concept and they have since launched a couple of phones in the form of the IO 3D and IO Pro 3D.
These are a pair of glasses-free 3D smartphones that are relatively affordable and can be had for $199.99 and $299.99 respectively. In terms of specs, they're not the most powerful smartphones we've seen, but then again we suppose you do get what you pay for.
ROKiT IO 3D:
- 5.45-inch 1440×720 display
- 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek processor
- 2GB of RAM
- 16GB of storage (expandable via microSD)
- 8MP rear-facing camera
- 2MP front-facing camera
ROKiT IO Pro 3D:
- 6-inch 2160×1080 display
- 2GHz octa-core MediaTek processor
- 4GB of RAM
- 64GB of storage (expandable via microSD)
- 13MP + 2MP rear-facing cameras
- 8MP front-facing camera
For those who might be worried about being able to find 3D content that takes advantage of the displays, not to worry because ROKiT will be launching the ROK Media Bundle which is a $4 a month subscription that will give users access to 3D content, but whether or not it will be worth it is a different story.
We're not sure if glasses-free 3D smartphones have a place in today's landscape, but if you're interested, you can head on over to their website to get your hands on either handset.
