Google’s Podcasts app finally gets some much-needed love

With billions of people across the globe spending more time at home to help stop the spread of COVID19 (coronavirus), Google has decided to release a significant update for its Podcasts app. When it made its debut a few years back, its feature set was pretty decent, but apps like Spotify, Pocketcasts and Overcast have done quite a bit over the past year to deliver much better experiences than what the Google Podcasts app has.

The new layout features a three-tab design which removes the emphasis from new podcast discovery and focuses it more on the podcasts you already subscribe to. This new layout also allows you to see which of your podcasts have new episodes to download and allows you to quickly download them from the main home screen without having to tap each individual podcast in order to queue up a handful of shows you want to listen to. If you want, the app will also send you a push notification as soon as one of the podcasts you subscribe to has a new episode for you to listen to which is a nice touch.

Google Podcasts did have an auto-download feature available to some users in the past, but the new update will finally make it available for everyone. Just keep in mind that this feature can take up quite a bit of storage on your device if you subscribe to a lot of podcasts. We recommend turning it on only for the podcasts that you listen to most frequently.

The update to the Google Podcasts app is currently rolling out, but with more than 10 million installs on Android, it could be a few days before you see the update on your device.
