We know that major US carriers such as AT&T have plans to roll out 5G networks this year, but the initial speed tests that were discovered showed that AT&T's 5G network was actually disappointingly slow. For AT&T customers who might be worried about what this means for the future of the carrier's 5G network, not to worry because it seems that the carrier has managed to turn things around in a relatively short amount of time.
AT&T has recently announced that during their testing, they have managed to achieve gigabit speeds on its 5G network, making them the first carrier in the US to do so. The carrier boasts that they have managed to hit these speeds using Netgear's Nighthawk 5G Mobile Hotspot, which means that depending on your hardware at home or in the office, you may or may not experience similar speeds.
The carrier had previously come under fire for choosing to roll out an update to phones on its network where they would start displaying the "5G E" icon, despite the fact that these phones are actually on 4G, not 5G. This was even more embarrassing for the carrier when during our speed tests, it was found that despite being called "5G E", AT&T's speeds were actually slower than T-Mobile's own 4G networks.
That being said, it's good to see AT&T's 5G networks hit gigabit speeds, but it is still a far cry from what SK Telecom in Korea has achieved, where with the use of triple aggregation, the carrier managed to hit 4Gbps speeds with the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G.
