Initial batch of the Samsung Galaxy Fold has sold out

The Samsung Galaxy Fold occupies a unique space in the smartphone market, where at $2,000 it makes it a very, very expensive smartphone to own. At the same time, it is one of the first foldable smartphones in the market and there is no doubt that many are curious to see if they are indeed the game-changer that we were promised.

It turns out that maybe the $2,000 price tag did not put many people off from buying it because according to a report from Droid-Life, it seems that Samsung has since sold out of their initial batch of Galaxy Fold handsets. The report claims that Samsung has sent out emails to customers who had reserved the phone but failed to pull the trigger when it came to pre-ordering.

The email let those customers know that "due to overwhelming demand", they will no longer be able to purchase the Galaxy Fold. Instead, they have been put on a waitlist where they will be notified when the phone has been restocked. This does not necessarily speak to the popularity of the phone since we don't know for sure how many units Samsung had initially produced, but it is surprising to see how many people are actually willing to pay $2,000 for a smartphone.

It will be interesting to see of the Huawei Mate X will be just as popular when it eventually goes on sale, especially given that it costs considerably more than the Galaxy Fold.
