Samsung’s official Galaxy Fold screen damage statement doesn’t offer much reassurance

Following numerous reports that Samsung Galaxy Fold review units are experiencing various issues with their foldable displays, Samsung has released an official statement on the matter. In cases like this, companies typically like to reassure the public that the issues reported aren't as serious as they seem, Samsung's statement does little dissuade the notion that the flexible displays on Samsung Galaxy Fold is extremely fragile.

A limited number of early Galaxy Fold samples were provided to media for review. We have received a few reports regarding the main display on the samples provided. We will thoroughly inspect these units in person to determine the cause of the matter.

Separately, a few reviewers reported having removed the top layer of the display causing damage to the screen. The main display on the Galaxy Fold features a top protective layer, which is part of the display structure designed to protect the screen from unintended scratches. Removing the protective layer or adding adhesives to the main display may cause damage. We will ensure this information is clearly delivered to our customers.

The only reassurance that Samsung does provide is that several of the reports of a damaged display on the Samsung Galaxy Fold were due to user error. The Samsung Galaxy Fold's internal display comes with a protective layer over it which can result in a broken display if removed. Samsung's statement makes it clear that this will be communicated to consumers when they purchase the device on April 26th. T-Mobile's @AskDes has shared an image which shows a warning sticker on the T-Mobile variant of the phone.

What's still unclear is how the Samsung Galaxy Fold will fare once it makes its way into the hands of general consumers. While review units can get handled during the review process, reviewers are typically pretty careful with the phones. Based on the reports from those who have experienced issues with the foldable display on the Galaxy Fold, none of the devices in question have been dropped or mistreated.

It'll be interesting to see this issue persists once the Samsung Galaxy Fold is out in the wild.
