A rumor started making the rounds that OnePlus was working on a sequel to the affordable OnePlus X. If you don't remember, that was a pretty beautiful ceramic-clad phone that packed a big punch for its modest price tag.
For one reason or another, OnePlus has yet to revisit that line, and if you were hoping that rumors of a potential OnePlus X2 were accurate, we're here to tell you to curb your enthusiasm. Company figurehead Carl Pei went to Twitter to categorically deny that the OnePlus X2 is real.
His initial damnation was subtle, but he later followed up with a more wordy plea for people to stop playing around with fake news. Yes, we use the term jokingly and loosely thanks to it being the preferred mantra of America's 45th president (the irony of which we just won't get into at this time), but fake news is bad. It's usually harmless in these particular circumstances, though, where the consequence is little more than disappointment for diehard OnePlus fans who were hoping to find another way to shell out cash for a smartphone this year.
Does that mean there will never be a OnePlus X2? No one knows, not even OnePlus, perhaps. Maybe we'll get a different phone with a different name that fulfills the same purpose. What we can tell you is that OnePlus was serious when they said they wanted to focus on creating one great smartphone every year, and so we'd suggest not holding your breath for it if you're in need of a new smartphone in 2018.
