There's no denying that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 is a powerhouse. It was announced over 7 months ago, but it remains a speedy and powerful chip. However, with the massive growth of mobile gaming, it seems that Qualcomm felt they needed to put something out before the new generation of the 800 series comes out.
The results of those efforts is the Snapdragon 855 Plus. It's pretty much identical to the standard Snapdragon 855 chip, but both the CPU and GPU have been overclocked for better performance in everything from gaming to regular tasks.
The overclock likely doesn't just come from tweaked parameters that could be done on any old 855, as production of chips gets better over time and high binned chips capable of reliably hitting higher clock speeds are a lot easier to manufacture.
The overclock isn't that big. The prime CPU core has been boosted from 2.84GHz to 2.96GHz. The GPU overclock results in a 15% boost in performance. Despite it just being an overclock, and a relatively small one at that, it's still nice to see that devices coming soon will be a bit faster than the ones we already have. Still, we should expect an entirely new chip from Qualcomm fairly soon.
