How to turn on Google Maps’ new speedometer

A new update to Google Maps includes a new speedometer feature which will show you your speed while using the navigation feature. Those who use Waze on a regular basis will know that the feature has been available for quite some time. Alongside the speed limit indication for the road you're traveling on, the speedometer is a great tool to keep you traveling at a safe speed while also showing others in the vehicle that you're obeying the law.

Google Maps AR walking directions has arrived!

To use the new Google Maps speedometer feature, you will need to install the latest version of Google Maps on your device, but the feature is technically being rolled out with a server-side update, so it may take a few days to show up on your device. To turn it on, follow the step-by-step instructions below.

How to turn on Google Maps speedometer

  • Open Google Maps and tap the hamburger menu icon in the top left corner
  • Tap Settings > Navigation Settings
  • Scroll down to Driving Option section and then toggle on Speedometer

Once the speedometer feature is turned on in Google Maps, you'll see your current speed in the bottom left corner of the app when you are in navigation mode. If Google Maps know the speed limit of the road you're traveling on, your speed will be posted alongside the posted speed limit.
