T-Mobile is on a roll. The company has been posting stellar growth numbers the past few years, but it wrapped up 2018 with its "best quarter ever." During the quarter, T-Mobile managed to add a record 2.4 million total net additions with 1 million post-paid subscribers, bringing the company total subscriber count to 79.7 million.
While that number is significantly higher than what T-Mobile was at a few years back, it's still a far cry from the 150 million customers AT&T and Verizon each have. The good news is that T-Mobile growth rate is much higher than its larger competitors. Verizon and AT&T did post positive subscriber gains for Q4 of 2018 as well, but their post-paid subscriber adds were dramatically lower. AT&T only added 69,000 postpaid lines and Verizon added 515,000.
The T-Mobile and Sprint merger is currently stalled due to the US government shutdown, but T-Mobile is hoping to have the deal approved and finalized this year. Once Sprint's customers are handed over to T-Mobile, the company will have more than 120 million customers and will be within throwing distance of AT&T and Verizon.
Some have speculated that T-Mobile could be content with its market share at that point, but we suspect John Legere will be kicking things up a few notches in order to surpass Verizon and AT&T to become the number one service provider in the US.
