It’s about time: Verizon will stop charging for its spam, robocalling blockers

In this day and age with such advanced technology in our hands, we have yet to truly eliminate annoyances such as spam and robocalls. Verizon has tools in place that allow users to block spam and robocalls, but those are only available to customers who are willing to pay $2.99 a month.

We're not sure what prompted the carrier to have a change of heart (CSR, maybe?), but the good news is that Verizon has since announced that they will be making their spam and robocall blocking tools free for all of their customers starting this March. The carrier is also boasting that its blocking features were found to be the most accurate/effective in a third-party study amongst wireless carriers.

The carrier also discussed some of the challenges when it comes to trying to identify robocallers, since robocallers tend to mask their identity through fake or spoofed numbers. As a result, there will be times when some of these calls do come through. Verizon claims that the lack of cooperation from internet-based providers, who are sometimes located out of the US, can make blocking and identifying such calls tricky.

Verizon has taken some steps of their own to try and address these issues from their end, such as preventing their services from being used by illegal robocallers. They are also supporting the STIR/SHAKEN call authentication technology, and also cite how they are a founding member of the US Telecom Industry Traceback Group whose goal is to trace robocall traffic and point the authorities in the right direction.

Verizon is expected to share more details on how customers can sign up for these features once it gets closer to launch.
