Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL now supports HDR on Netflix

High Dynamic Range (HDR) isn't a new concept in photography. In fact, photographers such as Trey Ratcliff made it his business and his signature when it comes to snapping such photos. However, in recent years we've started to see those concepts being applied to our smartphones and TVs as well.

In a rather quiet and unassuming update, it seems that both the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL have managed to pick up support for HDR on Netflix. Netflix's support page now lists the Pixel 3 as supporting HDR10. If you own either device and have a Netflix subscription, you can launch the app and look for the "HDR" logo on videos which more or less indicates that your device supports it.

So far HDR support has been rolling out a bit slowly because as you can see on the list, the number of Android phones that support it isn't particularly extensive. However we expect that eventually, it should make its way to more smartphones in the future, but for now, at least most of the major flagships are covered.

For those unfamiliar with HDR, as we said, this is a concept that has its foundations in photography where a burst of photos is taken at once, but each frame is taken at a different exposure. These photos are then combined to form a very vivid-looking image. The idea is that by combining the various exposures, it will present an image that will showcase details that might have otherwise been lost or hidden due to it being too dark or too bright. The end result is an image (or video in this case) that looks brighter and has more "pop" to it.
