LG G8X camera test: a bit disappointing

The new LG G8X and its dual displays may be the best alternative to the Samsung Galaxy Fold right now. The versatility of having a detachable secondary display may be the reason some will buy this new phone, but that may be the only real selling point since the cameras appear to be a bit of a letdown.

The specs are certainly there, though LG decided to go with a dual-sensor main camera rather than the triple sensor setup we've seen on most other devices this year. The standard sensor is 12MP with an f/1.8, 27mm lens, dual Pixel PDAF and OIS while its second camera consists of a 13MP sensor with an f/2.4, 9mm ultrawide lens. If you're looking for high-resolution selfies, the 32MP, f/1.9, 26mm setup on the front of the LG G8X should do the trick.

Unfortunately, specs won't tell the whole story. While at IFA last week, we tested the camera, capturing images and videos from all three of its sensors. We were hoping to be impressed, but the results were lackluster at best. Even though the lighting at the LG booth was spectacular, the images turned out a bit dull. We're not sure if it's a software or hardware issue, but we were definitely not impressed. Take a look at the sample images and the video above and let us know what you think of the LG G8X's camera quality. Hopefully, LG still has another software update to deliver to the phone before it shows up on store shelves.
