Those who thought 2019 would be the year of 5G are likely a bit disappointed. We have seen a handful of devices capable of connecting to 5G networks, but the majority of those devices, especially those here in the North America, have relied on Qualcomm chips with mmWave technology. Needless to say, mmWave 5G has its place, but the results are far from the 5G revolution we were promised.
Today, MediaTek is stepping into the 5G arena with its new Dimensity 1000 chipset which delivers the "world's fastest" data speeds, offering 4.7Gbps download and 2.5Gbps upload speeds on sub-6GHz 5G networks which should work like a charm on mid-band and low-band 5G networks like the ones AT&T and T-Mobile are building out. The chip will also support 5G on dual-SIM devices, rather than forcing users to choose which SIM can connect to 5G while the other is relegated to older 4G networks.
But the Dimensity 1000 has a lot more to offer than just 5G connectivity. The SoC features 7nm architecture with four ARM Cortex-A77 cores, four low-power Cortex-A55 cores and an AI core with twice the speed of its predecessor. The chip also has a five-core image signal processor which is capable of handling images captured from 80MP camera sensors, real-time HRD video capture and a whole lot more.
MediaTek has always struggled to compete with Qualcomm in the high-end segment, but the Dimensity 1000 should be a viable option for OEMs who are looking for build 5G devices without the high prices Qualcomm is charging for its 5G chipsets. The first devices powered by the Dimensity 1000 will be available before 2019 comes to a close, with a wave of devices expected to come in during 2020.
