Mobile World Congress kicks off in two weeks, and the focus will be on how companies are preparing for the release of 5G into the mainstream. One such company that has 5G on the brain is OnePlus, who will have a presence at the event and will take the opportunity to show off its hardware.
During the event, which runs from February 25 to February 28, OnePlus will be camped out at the Qualcomm booth with a prototype device that has 5G connectivity. While the device won't look anything remotely fit for public release, it gives those attending MWC 2019 a chance to demo what 5G connectivity can achieve. OnePlus is expected to focus heavily on the gaming possibilities that the new cellular standard provides given the lower latency of the new technology.
The benefits of 5G are over-shadowed with the practical challenge wireless carriers have of providing coverage to consumers. While 5G can achieve some amazing speeds and will be a game-changer when it is rolled out, this is entirely about OnePlus showing off what it can do on the hardware side, and not showcasing what is imminently available to consumers.
Mobile World Congress isn't open to the public, so we will be sure to bring you a glimpse of how the OnePlus 5G prototype looks. The implementation isn't without its challenges, so will be interesting to see how OnePlus plan to tackle the increased battery demands of early adoption, which sees non-standalone (NSA) 5G NR used that requires 4G LTE and 5G to be simultaneously enabled.
It's great to see OnePlus embracing the forefront of technology that will mean consumers (hopefully) won't have to spend over $1000 to get their hands on a 5G-enabled device.
