The concept of modular smartphones was very intriguing from both a technological and environmental standpoint. It would help solve the issue of phone upgrades where we would only upgrade the parts we need, instead of the entire device which could potentially solve the issue of electronics wastage.
Unfortunately the concept did not quite catch on, save for Motorola's Moto Mods which appear to be soldiering on just fine. More recently it seems that Motorola could actually have a new Moto Mod in the works that could appeal to the majority of their customers. This comes in the form of a 5G Moto Mod which was recently spotted at the FCC, hinting that a launch stateside could be happening in the near future.
For those unfamiliar with the Moto Mods, these are basically attachments that users can add to compatible Motorola handsets. While not exactly as modular compared to Project Ara, it does allow users to enhance the capabilities of their existing smartphone to suit their needs, whether it be a battery pack, extra speakers, or in this case, 5G.
This means that users won't need to pay for a 5G smartphone and can just purchase this 5G Moto Mod which would presumably be cheaper than a brand new phone. We're not sure if there could be potential compromises to speed and reliability when using the Moto Mod compared to built-in support, but it might be worth checking out.
Based on the FCC filing of the device, this Moto Mod double as a 2,000mAh battery pack as well, ensuring that you will still have enough juice if 5G proves to be a battery drain. Pricing of the accessory is unclear, but hopefully we'll be able to find out more come MWC 2019.
