Last year when Huawei announced their Mate 20 series, there was a lot of emphasis placed on the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro, but lest we forget, there was also the Mate 20 X which offered up a considerably larger display compared to the other two smartphones. Granted the phone could be overshadowed by the Mate 30 series this year, we shouldn't be so quick to discount it yet.
This is because at MWC 2019, Huawei has announced that they will be refreshing the Mate 20 X with 5G capabilities later this year. The company does not mention when the 5G variant of the Mate 20 X will be launched, but if could be worth keeping an eye out for. Details about the phone are scarce at this point in time, but it has been speculated that it could be packing Huawei's new Balong 5000 5G chipset which was announced a few weeks ago.
One of the advantages that Huawei is boasting of its Balong chipset is that it is apparently the first chipset that supports both standalone and non-standalone network architectures. This means that it will be able to hook onto existing 4G networks as well as future 5G networks, giving users the best of both worlds, so to speak.
The Mate 20 X will not be the company's only 5G smartphone as Huawei had also announced the Huawei Mate X, a foldable smartphone that also comes with 5G compatibility. However, the Mate X's asking price of €2,299 puts it way out of reach for the average consumer, so hopefully the 5G Mate 20 X will come with a more reasonable price tag.
