The new LG G8 mixed up the usual specs with unique software features

LG closed out MWC 2019's press day with the introduction of the LG G8 ThinQ. While LG's flagship lineup hasn't ever been as popular as Samsung's, the new smartphone seems to offer a decent spec list but its design does feel a bit tired at this point. The design of the LG G8 ThinQ isn't dramatically different from last year's model with an aluminum frame and glass on the back this is where the phone's fingerprint sensor is still located.

The main specs include a Snapdragon 855, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage and a 6.1inch, 1440 x 3120 Pixel OLED display with support for HDR10 with a substantial notch up top to house the front cameras.

The LG G8's rear camera is comprised of 12MP sensors with a standard lens and a second 16MP sensor with an ultra-wide lens which offers a 107-degree field of view. The phone also has an 8MP front-facing camera and a second ToF camera which delivers better portrait mode selfies in addition to a new feature called Air Control which allows you to control the device with certain gestures to change the volume to launch specific apps with a swipe in the air. This feature was implemented by Samsung years ago, but this should be a bit better thanks to the new camera hardware being used. It'll even let you unlock your phone using a palm ID since the camera is able to map the veins in your hand.

On top of that, LG is also doing away with the usual speaker on the front of the phone, instead transforming the display into a speaker diaphragm. LG is also bringing back its Boombox speaker design which is paired with a 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC to deliver a better audio experience than most other smartphones.

Pricing and availability

LG hasn't given an exact release date for the LG G8 ThinQ, but the company did say that it will make its debut in the US within the coming week. The price point wasn't announced either, but LG did say that it would be roughly the same price as last year's LG G7 which went on sale for $750.
