When Google changed the name of the Android Market to the Play Store it was clear the direction they wanted to take. What started as a place to download Android apps has grown to also contain movies, TV shows, music, books, and even devices. The next addition to the Play Store will be a perfect companion for the books.
A banner briefly appeared on the home page of the Play Store which said "Audiobooks now on Google Play" and "Get 50% off your first title." Clicking the banner leads to a URL that's not live yet. There haven't been any rumors or indications that Google was planning to get into the audiobook game. The banner clearly shows that they are close to announcing this new addition to the Play Store.
Competing with Audible.com will be no easy task. The Kindle bookstore is vast and there's an audiobook for almost every title. Audiobooks are very popular right now, but it will be tough for Google to make a dent. Hopefully, we'll get an official announcement soon. Would you be interested in Google Play audiobooks?
