Over the past couple of years, we've seen OnePlus team up with race car company McLaren to launch McLaren Edition smartphones. These devices aren't just a rebranding effort nor are they purely superficial. In fact, the McLaren Editions of the OnePlus phones come up with souped up specs compared to the non-McLaren counterparts.
The bad news is that if you were hoping to see a new OnePlus McLaren smartphone this year, you will be disappointed to learn that will not be happening. This is because according to a statement sent to Android Authority, a McLaren spokesperson confirmed that their partnership with OnePlus has ended, and it sounds like they will not be renewing it.
"Our partnership with OnePlus, which came to its scheduled conclusion recently, has been a highly successful collaboration between two iconic and innovative brands. Since the start of this partnership in 2018, OnePlus has been a supportive, valued partner and we wish them well and hope to see them in the future."
It is a bit disappointing to see this partnership end because like we said, unlike other partnerships we've seen in the past which include mostly aesthetic changes, the McLaren OnePlus phones were actually pretty awesome devices with better hardware and also came with improved designs.
We're not sure if OnePlus will be picking up a new partnership with another racing car team in the future, but for now, it looks like this will be the end of the company's racing-themed smartphones.
