How to SIM unlock the LG V50

Back in 2019, LG took the wraps off the LG V50. Unlike other companies like Samsung and Huawei, LG decided to skip the foldable phone bandwagon. Instead, the company decided to approach it a bit differently by offering an optional secondary display accessory. This ultimately gave users the freedom of choosing whether they wanted a larger display or a more conventional smartphone, plus it was cheaper too.

Now if you own the LG V50 and its SIM is still locked to your carrier, you can read on to find out how to unlock the SIM either for free, or by using services like Movical.

Getting the unlock code from your carrier

The good news is that unlocking your LG V50's SIM card can be a free process. If you'd rather not pay for a SIM unlocking service, your carrier can actually unlock your phone's SIM for free, although we should point out that there are several requirements that you will need to meet in order to get it done.

  • For starters, the LG V50 needs to have been paid off in full. Given that most carriers sell their phones on installment plans paid through a 24-month contract, there is a chance you might not have paid off your device just yet.
  • Secondly, you will also need to make sure that you have owned the device for at least 60-90 days, so if you just bought the phone, you might be out of luck. Since the LG V50 was launched in 2019, this shouldn't be a problem.
  • Lastly, you will need to be in "good standing" with your carrier. This basically means that you do not owe your carrier anything in terms of bill payments, so if you do have outstanding bills, you'll need to pay them off first before your carrier will consider unlocking your LG V50's SIM for free.

If you meet those requirements, then here are the steps to take to get your free SIM unlock code:

  1. On your LG V50 device, launch the Phone dialer app and dial *#06# to get your device's IMEI number.
  2. You will want to write this number down somewhere as you will need to refer to it later
  3. Call your carrier's customer service hotline and request for a SIM unlock
  4. You will then be asked to provide the service rep with your LG V50's IMEI number
  5. You might have to answer some questions and your status with your carrier might need to be checked, but assuming you pass and meet those requirements, you should receive the SIM unlock code in your email in the next 2-5 days
  6. Once you've received your code, swap out the current SIM on your phone
  7. Enter the SIM unlock code that you received in your email and you should be good to go

Getting the unlock code from a third-party service

Of course, not everyone will be eligible for a free SIM unlock from their carrier due to possibly not meeting some of the requirements we mentioned above, but not to worry. If you want to take your LG V50 with you to another carrier or use a local SIM while traveling, there are still options available to you, such as using Movical's SIM unlock services.

  1. On your LG V50 handset, launch the Phone app and dial *#06# to display your phone's IMEI number
  2. Write the IMEI number down somewhere as you will have to refer to it later
  3. Go to Movical's website
  4. Select the country you are in and the carrier you bought the phone from and also the currency you wish to pay in
  5. Enter the device's IMEI number
  6. Complete the checkout process with your payment and contact information
  7. Once that's all settled and done, you should then receive the LG V50's unlock code in a matter of hours up to a few days (depending on the package you've chosen)
  8. The moment you've received your code, you can then swap out the SIM on your phone with a SIM from another carrier
  9. When you put in the new SIM, you should be prompted to enter the SIM unlock code that you received in your email, and once you've done that, you should be good to go

Assuming you went through all the steps above, your LG V50 is now fully unlocked and you should be able to use it with any carrier, even if you were to buy a SIM card from a foreign country while you're traveling. Note that this does not free you up from any contractual obligations you might still have with your carrier, this only means your phone will be able to be used with any supported carrier any time you wish.
