Qualcomm recently announced its new flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 865 that we imagine will find its way into many a flagship smartphone next year. One thing that we found odd is that despite it supposedly being the best Qualcomm has to offer, it does not offer 5G integration, instead, manufacturers will need to add a separate X55 modem to achieve 5G.
What's more interesting is that Qualcomm has instead opted to include 5G integration into its new mid-range lineup, the Snapdragon 765 and Snapdragon 765G chipsets. These chipsets will be coming with the X52 5G modem integrated into them, meaning that handset makers who want to include 5G on their mid-range phones won't need a separate component.
Qualcomm claims that its X52 5G modem will offer up to 3.7Gbps download speeds, sub 6GHz, Dynamic Spectrum Sharing, NSA, SA, and support for mmWave. We're not sure why Qualcomm has decided to integrate 5G into its mid-range chipsets, but perhaps the integration could help cut down on costs which in turn could encourage more handset makers to adopt it.
This also benefits customers as it could signal that come 2020, 5G smartphones no longer need to be exclusive to high-end (and expensive) flagships, and might also be available in mid-rangers as well.
