Google’s real-time interpreter translation tool finally launches on mobile

Earlier this year, Google started rolling out a new feature for Google Assistant in the form of an interpreter. Basically, this feature would help users translate speech from one language to another in real-time. Initially, this feature was only available on smart speakers and displays powered by Google Assistant, but it looks like it is now available for mobile as well.

If you have an Android device, all you need to do is launch Google Assistant and say something like, "Hey Google, be my German translator" and it will launch the interpreter feature. From there, you just need to say what you want and it will automatically translate it to German along with a written version in both the original language you set and also German.

If you're thinking, this isn't a new feature per se, you would be right. Google Translate on mobile already offers a conversation feature that is similar where both parties can speak in their respective languages and have it translated at the same time. One of the main differences with this feature in Google Assistant, is that it also offers up Smart Replies similar to Gmail that can help keep the conversation going, if you want to.

Also, given that this is baked into Google Assistant itself, it will work right out of the box on pretty much any Android phone that uses Google Assistant, thus saving users the need to download an additional app.
