Modular smartphones are a fantastic idea, let’s bring them back

One of the main arguments as to why PC is considered better than Mac computers is because of their modular nature. This allows users to swap out parts or add to their build as and when they need. Run out of storage? No problem, just slot in an extra HDD. Need more RAM? All you need is to slot in an extra RAM stick and you're good to go.

Unfortunately, this is not the case with smartphones, where we are actively encouraged to make upgrades every year or every other year.

But if you recall, several years ago, Motorola (while it was owned by Google) embarked on an ambitious quest to create a modular smartphone in the form of Project Ara. The idea was similar to building a PC, where users could swap parts in and out as needed, giving users more choice and flexibility in creating a phone specifically for themselves and their needs.

Despite many promises to launch the device, Project Ara ultimately ended up being quite the flop and was cancelled, but now that we're in 2020 with a lot more experience on our hands, should the modular smartphone concept be revisited?

Yes, because why not?

Full Customization And Flexibility

One of the things lacking in our smartphones these days is flexibility in terms of its physical components. We pretty much have to accept whatever companies throw at us, even though sometimes we wished that a phone would have better battery life, a brighter display, more RAM, more storage, and so on.

Modular smartphones can solve that problem where if you need a phone that has fantastic battery life, simply buy a bigger battery module and attach it to your phone. Or maybe you prefer having an ultra wide-angle camera over superzoom, swapping out the camera module will solve that as well.

Focused Development On Individual Components

By creating modules and components, it can allow companies to focus on the development of these modules, as opposed to trying to create a smartphone as a whole. Apps are a perfect example, where there are plenty of third-party apps out there that outperform native apps due to their focused development on it.

This could also lead to completely brand new industries where third-party modules and components for smartphones are being developed.

Better For The Environment (Potentially)

Whenever we upgrade our phones, we basically give up the previous phone in favor of the new one. While companies like Apple try their best to harvest as much as the old tech and materials as possible, it feels like an uphill battle. By creating modular components, customers only need to upgrade parts they need.

This in turn could potentially reduce the amount of resources we need to consume to make a smartphone. For example, users who are perfectly happy with the current camera system and don't see the need to upgrade can choose to keep it and upgrade other parts of their phone.

This is versus the current situation where components for cameras are still being made even though it might not necessarily be a feature that the customer has asked for or is prioritizing.

The Challenges

That being said, we understand that there was probably a reason why Project Ara failed. It could have been due to technical issues where maybe a modular smartphone just wasn't feasible at that time. It might have also been a financial issue where perhaps trying to create multiple modules was an inventory nightmare which could leave companies sitting on a lot of unsold products.

However, like we said, we are in 2020 now, so maybe taking the experience we've gained over the past 3-4 years and revisiting the concept of modular smartphones might not be such a bad idea.

Huawei’s future in 2020 might not be as bad as we think

There are many reasons why people prefer using Android over iOS. One could argue that it is because that Android is more "open" compared to iOS, allowing more customization and flexibility compared to iPhones. Others prefer Android due to the deep integration of Google's services on their devices.

After all, many of us use a myriad of Google services like Google Search, Maps, Gmail, Docs, and so on, and having it integrated into your phone is quite useful.

Unfortunately, Huawei will be going into 2020 with one hand tied behind their back.

Despite the US and China seemingly coming to a partial agreement in their ongoing trade war, Huawei still remains on the sidelines, where the company has recently confirmed that the upcoming P40 series will not come with Google Play Services installed.

Is this a big deal? We think so, but at the same time, maybe its impact on Huawei might not be as bad as some might think.

What is Google Play Services?

To give you some context, in case you're unfamiliar with Google Play Services, this can be sort of thought to be one of the key features of Android which powers many of Google's services. This includes APIs such as Google Maps, Google Drive, Google Cast, and so on. It also features Google Play Protect which helps protect users from downloading malicious apps from the Play Store.

So how does Huawei survive 2020?

Despite Google Play Services playing a big part of the Android ecosystem, it should be noted that even with the legal troubles that plagued Huawei since the start of 2019, the company has still managed to ship 200 million smartphones in 2019, doing it in record time and 64 days earlier compared to 2018.

This suggests that even when faced with all these hurdles, Huawei has no problems courting customers. This is especially true in China where the company's devices were not shipped with Google Play Services to begin with, meaning that there is a huge market that already gets by without relying on Google.

There is also the advantage of national pride, where in the face of the ongoing trade war between the US and China, we are hearing stories of how companies in China are reportedly actively encouraging their employees to purchase locally-made smartphones instead of those made by foreign companies.

Huawei is also expected to ship its own take to Google Play Services in the form of Huawei Mobile Services. Of course, whether or not it will be good enough to replace apps that Android users have become familiar with remains to be seen, so we'll just have to wait and see.

Last but not least, this is mostly a software-related issue. Should the trade war between the US and China ever get resolved, all it would take is a software update to bring Google Play Services back to Huawei's phones.

Crazy deal on Anker’s Zolo Liberty true wireless earbuds offers 62% discount

Typically all the good deals come before Christmas rolls around, but Anker has just slashed the price on its Zolo Liberty true wireless Bluetooth earbuds, bringing them to their lowest price ever!

Typically priced at $80, the Zolo Liberty earbuds are now welling for $29.99 thanks to a price drop and an extra $20 coupon through Amazon. The discounted price is absolutely phenomenal when you consider that up until late November, Anker was selling the earbuds for $100.

The Zolo Liberty earbuds offer a good balance of decent audio quality thanks to graphene-coated drivers which provide precision oscillation, 100 hours of battery life with the included charging case (8 hours on a single charge) and sweat resistance for those who want to use them during a workout.

Like most other Anker products, the earbuds also come with a phenomenal warranty and an extended return period if you decide that they're not exactly what you were hoping for. The $49.99 discounted price will last for a full 7 days, but it's unclear how long the additional $20 coupon will be available.

Insta360’s new camera boasts an exciting “all in one” solution for 360 action camera loving drone pilots.

Insta360 has announced on Twitter something new is coming on the 7th January 2020. The teaser video which includes horrifying scenes of an action camera, drone, "1 inch cam" and their very own insta360 One X being obliterated in a blender has beamed across the internet and is causing a storm. In the sfor video Insta360 display bold promises that their new product will combine all the aforementioned into one.

So, is this a subtle hint to prepare us for Insta360 entering the drone market in 2020? I guess we don't have long to wait until we find out. However with the ability to fly and shoot 360 footage simultaneously it will completely revolutionise modern drones reducing the need for cumbersome and fragile 3 axis gimbals that we already see on more popular drones, and which for many have been a weak breaking point when experiencing a bumpy landing. Insta360's fantastically stable flowstate video processing would definitely provide rock solid free capture video opportunities, something that many DJI users have been hacking over the years with 3D printed mounts and duct tape. This feature alone would ensure as a drone pilot you never miss the shot you were after and help conserve valuable flying time, without the need to retake shots.

This is exciting news for drone pilots, action camera and 360 photography enthusiasts alike. Stay tuned for more news as we learn what's coming from Insta360 in the next week, safe to safe we're excited to see what they have to offer.

Master & Dynamic MH40 Wireless review: Modern reissue of a classic

Master & Dynamic released their first headphones five years ago now. The MH40 were a wired pair of over-ear headphones aimed at replicating headphones of old both in looks and in durability. The result was a seriously gorgeous retro set of headphones that didn't skimp on build quality or sound.

But five years later, the market has moved away from wired headphones. Wired still has its place, but everything is now wireless. And it has to be, since we don't even have headphone jacks anymore. So to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the MH40 release, Master & Dynamic reissued these headphones with a wireless twist.

Note: Some images show the optional alcantara ear cups. The stock ear cups are leather.

Overview

  • Drivers: 40mm Neodymium
  • Impedance: 32 ohms
  • Bluetooth version: 5.0 with AptX
  • Distance: 100 feet
  • Battery life: 18 hours
  • Dimensions: 205mm x 202mm x 71mm
  • Weight: 276g
  • Price: $299.00
  • Where to buy: Exclusively on Master & Dynamic

The Master & Dynamic MH40 feature all of their controls on the right side. At the bottom you'll find a USB-C port, an indicator LED, and the power button. Further up on the narrow part of the cup there are three buttons. The center button is for play/pause and triggering the assistant, while the two flanking it are volume buttons. The center button is raised so it's easy to find, and the controls are placed perfectly so they're under your thumb when you put your hand on the ear cup. They're simple, easy to use, and perfectly placed.

What you won't find is a 3.5mm jack. This is a really surprising omission, knowing Master & Dynamic and their strive to be as consumer friendly as possible. Usually there's a 3.5mm headphone jack on Bluetooth headphones (2.5mm if you're unlucky) so you can plug an aux cable into them for wired use when the battery dies. Instead of a 3.5mm headphone jack, you get a USB-C to 3.5mm cable. Which works just as well.

The issue I have is that this is a proprietary cable running analog audio over USB. If you lose it, you're out of luck. Not only that, but you can't use microphones like the V-MODA BoomPro (which I love) and M&D's own Boom Mic. This means you can't use the headphones as a wired headset for gaming or conference calls. The included cable doesn't have a mic on it nor does it have the pin on the 3.5mm end to utilize the headphone's mic in wired mode. Yes, even calls won't work with this cable and it's a huge disappointment.

The originals have the coordinates for Grand Central Station under one of the ear cups, honoring a landmark of their home city. But with the MH40 Wireless, they've also added a set of coordinates underneath the hinge. These coordinates will be for one of ten world landmarks, and which you'll get is random. it doesn't really make the product any better, but this care and attention to detail does make it special.

Build quality

If there's one thing Master & Dynamic is known for, it's build quality. All of their products are made with premium materials with real care and attention to detail. And with the MH40, it may show the most.

The original MH40 headphones were all aluminum and stainless steel, with no plastic to be found. The ear cups were made from one piece of solid aluminum each! They were wrapped in heavy grain cowhide on the headband and exterior pieces with lambskin on the inside of the headband and the ear cups. This lambskin is so smooth and soft and feels like a million bucks. And best of all, the ear cups are magnetic and just pop off. You can replace them when they're worn, or throw on some optional alcantara ear cups for max fuzzy comfort.

The new MH40 Wireless are almost identical, with the same body and construction. The main difference is that Master & Dynamic traded out much of the stainless steel for more aluminum. This makes the headphones 25% lighter, at 276 grams rather than 320. Both for comfort and portability, this is a big improvement. The cowhide was also traded out for coated canvas, which has a unique look and feel.

Otherwise you have the same incredibly solid construction. The rivets on the faces are engraved with "M&D". The pivot points for the hinge are also engraved. The adjustment mechanism has a window with numbers on the shaft. It also has no detents, just a smooth movement. I wish it was tighter like the MW60 though, as it does easily shift. The top of the adjuster has a ridged cap with the logo, while the bottom is beautifully knurled. The headband has partially exposed metal bars. The canvas on the top is nicely stitched in four rows. There are so many little details that make the MH40 Wireless truly special.

The only parts that don't exude quality are the buttons. Unlike the MW60, they are plastic. They feel nice enough, but they do have a slight spring sound when pressed. It's nothing bad, and it's not nearly as bad as buttons on some other headphones, but it does stand out. The MW60 buttons were metal and delightfully clicky.

In the box you'll find two cables and a travel pouch (with a zippered pocket for the cables). The pouch closes magnetically and the zipper pull is leather (or feels like it). The cables are nicely braided, much tighter and smoother than most braided cables, and have really nice metal ends. I only wish the USB cable was the C-to-C cable with a C-to-A adapter we saw with the MW07 series.

Sound quality

Headphones are made for listening. Music, movies, whatever you please. And if they don't sound good, what good are they? Well these days headphones have more utility than just audio, and we're in an interesting time where I can recommend headphones that don't actually sound that good if they do everything else well. However, these are not those headphones. These are old school headphones. These are the headphones you buy to enjoy your media.

M&D's classic sound signature is in full force here, although the drivers in the MH40 Wireless are not the same ones in the original MH40. The 40mm beryllium drivers are aided by Qualcomm aptX (I wish M&D would adopt aptX HD or Adaptive in the future). The highs are bright and detailed. They're a bit sparkly, but unlike a few of their products, they're not piercing or harsh. The lows are just a bit boosted with a warm mid-low and a good amount of bump. The bass isn't super sharp and punchy, but it's very warm and pleasant. The mids are flat in comparison, they don't stand out but they sound great. The end result is tons of detail and a really fun sound signature that's great to relax to. It's not entirely flat or close to reference, but it's well balanced and really versatile.

Bass heads may be disappoint that the bass isn't as sharp as what V-MODA does. But there's surprisingly little rumble in rock and metal which is a big benefit, and I love the warmth and smoothness. In fact, every genre you throw at these headphones sounds fantastic. Whether it's poorly mixed metal, pop, electronic, or jazz, they nail it at every step.

Comfort

The original MH40 weight 360 grams, a bit heavy for wired headphones. Of course this was part of their incredibly solid feel, but more importantly it weighed them down on your head leading to fatigue after some time. Thanks to the 25% weight loss, the MH40 Wireless are so much more comfortable.

The lighter weight, the wide and plush headband, and the large ear cups all make for a wonderfully comfortable fit. The cups are both deep and long, fitting even bigger ears like mine with no contact of the ears to the inside of the cups. The long cup design is great because obviously ears are long, not round. My earlobes rejoice.

I've worn these headphones for six hours at a time with no fatigue or heat build up. They're ridiculously comfortable, one of the most comfortable headphones I've ever worn. And best of all, there's nothing for long hair to get snagged on when you take them off (I'm looking at you, Sony).

Connection

Master & Dynamic has had historically fantastic antenna design. Even with older versions of Bluetooth, they managed much longer range than Bluetooth headphones are usually known for. Walking away from your phone into another room, even two walls across, is no trouble for many of their products.

The MH40 Wireless are no different, but they step up their game with Bluetooth 5.0. The advertised range is 100 feet and I believe it. Two walls in the way is where they start to stutter a bit, but around a single room or walking down the hall, there are no cut outs or problems.

Battery life

Battery life is a weak point for the MH40 Wireless. They're advertised as having an 18 hour battery life, which is decent but not fantastic. Others at this price point are rocking 20-30 hour battery life, making 18 hours sound pretty underwhelming. Still, this is plenty of time for a flight or quite a few movies.

The issue is that they don't ever hit this 18 hour figure. With volumes relatively high, I got about 11 hours before the low battery sound started playing. Now Android tells me there's 20% battery left, which sounds like a usable amount, but it really isn't.

This is because the low battery sound is very loud. It scared me a few times to the point of jumping. And it plays every 5 minutes, making wearing them with a low battery pretty unpleasant.

Thankfully they do charge very quickly via the USB-C port. Half an hour gets you half a charge and 80 minutes gets you a full charge, meaning in half an hour you can get enough juice to fly from San Francisco to New York. This eases the battery life woes but at this price point, they really should last longer.

Conclusion

Master & Dynamic MH40 Wireless Rating: star_fullstar_fullstar_fullstar_fullstar_25 (4.25 / 5)

The Good

  • Look absolutely stunning
  • Sound fantastic
  • Comfort is stellar
  • Controls are solid

The Bad

  • Battery life is not good
  • Buttons have hollow spring sound
  • No 3.5mm jack
  • Don't fold

As a set of daily Bluetooth headphones, the MH40 Wireless really aren't the best. They don't fold, the battery doesn't last long, and they don't have many of the features we've come to expect at this price point like active noise cancelling, an ambient mode, and app controls. There are other headphones on the market better for that, but they have their own major shortcomings.

Headphones like the Sony WH-1000XM3 and Beats Studio 3 are cheaply built (the Sonys feel like creaky toys!) and don't sound like their price tags imply. The MH40 sound incredible and are built like a tank. They should last a long long time. And when you're wearing them and listening to music, their shortcomings melt away as the impressive sound quality and fantastic comfort creep over you. If you care at all about sound, keep the MH40 on your list as a lovely wireless set of headphones you can really enjoy. And when you're done, you can hang them up on a stand and just drool over their beauty.

Happy 5th anniversary M&D. The MH40 Wireless is one of your more flawed products, but it may be my favorite one yet.

Samsung’s 2020 flagship could be called the Galaxy S20

For years, Samsung's Galaxy S-series has been following a sequential order where every year, its model number increases by one. This year it was the Galaxy S10, and last year it was the Galaxy S9, and by that logic, next year's model should be known as the Galaxy S11, right?

Turns out Samsung has a different idea. According to a tweet by leakster Ice Universe, apparently Samsung is planning on naming its 2020 flagship smartphone the Galaxy S20, supposedly in honor of it being the year 2020. Ice Universe also suggests that this will be a "new beginning" for Samsung, although what exactly he means by that we're not sure.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 (as it is now known as) will be announced in the early part of 2020. Samsung has yet to officially announce a launch date for the phone, but we expect that it will probably take place in the first quarter of the year.

Samsung changing up the naming of its smartphones shouldn't come as a surprise. As time goes on, the number of models increases. Apple did something similar with its iPhone where they named the 2018 model the iPhone X, so for Samsung to do something similar makes sense.

Android 11 could remove 4GB video recording file size limit

The reason why our smartphone storage is getting larger these days is because of the increase in display size and resolution, and also the upgrades to the camera where we are getting considerably larger megapixels, which in turn means photos with bigger file sizes. Our cameras are also capable of capturing 4K video, which is by no means small.

Unfortunately within Android, Google has capped the video recording file size to 4GB. This is actually more than enough for most users, but for those who plan to use their phones to record extended videos, maybe to make video clips for YouTube, then this can be problematic.

The good news is that according to XDA Developers, a new commit in the AOSP gerrit has revealed that Google is looking to remove the 32-bit file size limitation and will use a 64-bit offset in mpeg4writer. Basically, it will remove the 4GB file size limitation and according to the report, it seems that Google successfully tested a file size of 32GB.

It even claims that Google managed to record a video file size that used up pretty much all of the storage on the phone in a single recording. We're not sure how many of us would need such a large file, but at least the option will be there. Note that this is for Android 11 so we'll have to wait until 2020 for it.

Pixel 4a render leaves nothing to the imagination

Right on queue, the Pixel 4a leaks have kicked into high gear. A new report from @OnLeaks via 91 Mobiles reveals quite a bit about the phone hardware and a 3D render of the device gives us our first look at what design changes Google has in store for the Pixel 4a.

The phone's display will be slightly larger at 5.7 or 5.8 inches, but Google's design team has managed to make the body smaller than last year's model, measuring in at 144.2 x 69.5 x 8.2mm. The reason for this is the thin, even bezel on all sizes and the hole-punch cutout for the front-facing camera.

Since the Pixel 4a will be another mid-range device, the phone only sports a single camera on the back, along with a standard rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. While this isn't anything different from the Pixel 3a, Google has updated the Pixel 4a esthetic to be in line with the Pixel 4 by giving the phone a square camera bump.

Other hardware features include a 3.5mm headphone jack on the top edge, a USB C port, and speakers on the bottom and an accented power button next to the volume rocker on the right edge.

For now, we still don't know what processor the Pixel 4a will use or how much RAM it will offer. It seems reasonable that Google would upgrade to 6GB of RAM like it did with the Pixel 4, but doing so may increase the price of the phone. At $399, the Pixel 3a was one of our favorite mid-range devices of 2019. Bumping that price up, even by a little, could make the Pixel 4a a bit less appealing.

As for the Pixel 4a's launch window, all signs point to Google I/O in early May.

Pocophone F2 could be launching in 2020

2018 saw the launch of what could be arguably one of the best value-for-money smartphones. This came in the form of the Pocophone F1. Many had anticipated that the company would release a successor this year. In fact, there were some benchmarks that suggested that the phone was indeed in development, but unfortunately with less than a week to go, it looks like the Pocophone F2 might not surface this year.

The good news is that if you are looking forward to the successor of the Pocophone F1, 2020 could be the year that it will happen. This is according Pocophone head, Alvin Tse, who tweeted that we can expect to hear more about the Poco brand in 2020. Tse later deleted his tweet, but not before it led to speculation that his tweet could mean that the Pocophone F2 could be coming in 2020.

That being said, Tse never explicitly mentioned the F2, but rather he seemed to be talking more about the brand itself. It is entirely possible that maybe we won't see the Pocophone F2, and that the company could have something else up their sleeves, but at the same time, why wouldn't they launch a successor?

After all, like we said, the Pocophone F1 was 2018's most value-for-money smartphone where it packed flagship specs at budget prices. It also did extremely well in a blind smartphone camera test and made it to second place, meaning that its successor (with some tweaks and improvements), should do considerably better.

Either way, we'll have to wait until 2020 to find out, but fingers-crossed that the company has not given up on the Pocophone F2 yet!

This is how different the Samsung Galaxy S11 models will look from each other

We know that come 2020, Samsung will be releasing their next flagship smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S11. As with the 2019 Galaxy S10 models, we expect that the company will most likely have several different models to choose from in different sizes and different price points.

In a new leak posted on Twitter by leakster Ice Universe, we have an idea of how big each of the models will look like, especially when comparing it together, so if you are planning on getting the phone, this might be a good way to see how big the phones are and decide which model might be best suited for you.

In case you're catching up with the Samsung Galaxy S11 rumors for the first time, the company is expected to continue with the "e" lineup with the Galaxy S11e. This will be the smallest of the trio, but even then, it's not exactly small. Rumors are claiming it could sport a 6.2-inch display, a pretty substantial jump over the Galaxy S10e which has a 5.8-inch screen.

As for the Galaxy S11, this model might be packing a 6.7-inch display while the Galaxy S11+ could come with a 6.9-inch display, making it only marginally bigger than the regular Galaxy S11. This can be seen in the photo shared by Ice Universe where the difference in screen sizes between the Galaxy S11 and Galaxy S11+ aren't particularly huge.

Take it with a grain of salt but with Samsung potentially announcing the new phones in the first few months of the year, we shouldn't have to wait too long for the official details.

Smartphone tech we’re looking forward to in 2020

Has 2019 been a good year for smartphones? Foldable phones were meant to challenge the status quo, but it doesn't seem to have made much of an impact, but the good news is that in a few weeks' time, it will be 2020 which means that we have a whole new year to get things right, and here are some of the things we're looking forward to in the new year.

No more notch!

We get it, the notch/hole-punch is a necessary evil as it helps companies embed their cameras into the display, but what we're really looking forward to is a camera system that can exist under the display without the need for a special cutout or hole in our displays. Samsung is said to be working on such a tech, but from what we can tell, it probably won't be making its debut in the Galaxy S11, but here's hoping we'll still see it in 2020, maybe with the Note 11.

Expand On Google's Motion Sense

Touchless gestures aren't exactly new, but with the Pixel 4, Google has turned to radar technology to take things up a notch. So far it doesn't feel very impressive, but we believe that this tech has great potential and could be a huge game changer in terms of how we use our phones, so we'd like to see Google or some other company take the tech and run with it and come up with some awesome ideas.

More 120Hz Displays Please

More companies are embracing displays with higher refresh rates, although for the most part, most of them are capped at 90Hz. This is odd given that the original Razer Phone managed 120Hz, but yet companies are still pushing 90Hz. Hopefully with smartphones in 2020, 120Hz will start becoming the norm.

True Wireless Charging

Wireless charging, despite the name, still isn't 100% wireless. Being forced to place your device on a charging mat is almost as good as tethering it to a cable, but worse, because when you lift it up, it stops charging. We know that true wireless charging tech does exist, but we would like to see it become a reality and incorporated into commercially available devices.

Make Foldable Phones Work

Foldable phones hold immense potential because come on, a phone that transforms into a tablet and back into a phone again, how awesome is that?! Unfortunately, the tech has failed to take off in a big way. Motorola has kind of challenged the form factor with the Motorola RAZR, so hopefully we'll see more companies take that kind of risk in 2020 because it would be a shame to see the tech behind foldable phones go to waste.

Conclusion

There's a lot of tech that we'd love to see in our smartphones in 2020, whether or not companies deliver remains to be seen. CES and MWC 2020 are around the corner so we guess we won't have to wait too long to find out if any parts of our wishlist come true, so be sure to check back with us then for more smartphone-related updates!

LEAK: Samsung’s Galaxy Fold 2 to feature folding glass

Samsung's first foldable display smartphone has only been on the market for a few months now, but rumors are picking up regarding the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 already. Multiple leaks suggest that the second-generation foldable smartphone from Samsung will look more like the Motorola Razr than the original Galaxy Fold.

The latest rumor suggests that Samsung may be ready to deploy its foldable "Samsung Ultra Thin Glass" to protect the flexible display of the phone. This latest leak comes from @UniverseIce. While Samsung's trademarked flexible glass was not mentioned by name, he does state that Samsung will use "an ultra-thin glass cover for the first time in the world, replacing plastic materials."

The move from plastic to glass is an important step in the right direction for foldable display smartphones as first-generation products have proven to be extremely fragile. The original launch of the Samsung Galaxy Fold was purchased back nearly half a year so that Samsung could improve its design ad Huawei has yet to launch the Mate X which was unveiled at Mobile World Congress back in February.

While we have no reason not to believe the latest rumor, we suggest taking this news with a grain of salt. There is still a lot we don't know about the upcoming Galaxy Fold 2, but the details that have been revealed so far suggest that Samsung is working hard to make folding smartphones more durable and a lot cheaper for the masses.

Check out these Huawei P40, P40 Pro renders

Come 2020, Huawei is expected to continue pushing out flagship handsets, such as the Huawei P40 series that will launch in the early part of the year. Now thanks to freshly leaked renders by @OnLeaks and 91mobiles, we might have an idea of what the upcoming handset could look like.

According to the leaked renders, it seems that the phone could feature a curved display where it wraps slightly around the edge of the phone. While that seems to be in line with Huawei's design language, what stands out in these leaked renders is the camera module on the back, which looks massive.

If the rumors are to be believed, the P40 series will come with four cameras on the back, although exactly what kind of sensor combo we're looking at remains to be seen. In terms of size of the phone, the P40 will sport a display anywhere between 6.1-inches to 6.2-inches, while the P40 Pro could sport a display between 6.5-inches to 6.7-inches.

The renders are pretty dark so we can't really make out the rest of the phone, so take it with a grain of salt.

Huawei themselves have confirmed that the P40 series will be launching the early part of the year. The company had also previously confirmed that the phones will not launch with Google Play Services. Instead, they are expected to use Huawei's own mobile services, so if you were hoping that these issues would be resolved with the P40 phones, you might be disappointed.

Honor 9X Pro real-world camera test

The Honor 9X Pro may not be on your radar in the U.S. since the company isn't selling the phone here, but it is quite popular over in Europe and Asia. While the phone's price tag would make you think that it's a mid-range phone, Honor has packed in some impressive hardware, especially for its cameras.

The main camera includes a triple sensors setup, featuring a 48MP sensor for the main camera with an f/1.8 lens, an 8MP secondary sensor with an f/2.4, 13mm ultrawide lens and a 2MP depth sensor. On the front, the Honor 9X Pro comes with a 16MP pop-up selfie camera that allows the phone to feature an uninterrupted edge-to-edge display. The only real downside is that all the cameras are only capable of recording 1080p video at 30fps.

To give you an idea of what the camera and video quality from the Honor 9X Pro are like, we captured over 70 photos and videos using the phone's various sensors. My initial impressions are fairly positive, but I'll be providing more insights into the overall camera experience once I've compared the Honor 9X Pro to a few other devices.

Take a look at the video and image gallery ad let us know what you think of the Honor 9X Pro's camera quality.

Get an awesome $300 off an S10+, plus discounts on the S10 and S10e for the holidays

Despite being almost a year old, the trio of Samsung Galaxy S10 devices is surprisingly competitive with newer releases. With the Snapdragon 855 still being fairly new (and the 855+ just being an overclock), large hole punch displays with minimal bezels, and a quality camera setup, all three devices are a great buy even now.

The largest model is the best deal, coming in at just $699.99. This is 30% off the regular price of the Galaxy S10+, bringing it below the price of a Pixel 4 (and you get a much bigger battery and an extra camera). The regular S10 is 28% off, costing $649.99. It's not that much cheaper than the S10+ but you do get a smaller device.

My favorite is the S10e, which ditches the curved display and in-display fingerprint sensor for a classic flat screen and a more accurate side mounted capacitive sensor. Plus the small size just feels great in the hand. It's down 20% to just $599.99. Unfortunately you do lose the zoom camera, but you still get an ultrawide angle.

Whether you're planning to upgrade your old device or you want to pick up a gift for the holidays, the Galaxy S10 and its bigger and smaller siblings are an awesome choice. Especially at these prices!

Sorry Samsung, the planned Galaxy S10 Lite is completely useless

Samsung is known for pumping out dozens of new phone models every year. Besides the usual S and Note series devices, Samsung also has a huge selection of Galaxy A series of phones for those who want mid-range and budget-friendly options.

Recently, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite has been making the news. Expected to look similar to the Galaxy S10 or S10+, the new phone would be introduced within the next few weeks, sporting slightly different specifications. The phone would still be powered by a Snapdragon 855 and have 8GB of RAM, but it would feature a 6.7-inch display with a downgraded resolution of 2400×1080.

The camera setup on the Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite would also be downgraded with a 48MP main sensor, 12MP with an f/2.2 ultra-wide lens, and the same 5MP f/2.4 macro lens which was introduced on the budget-friendly Galaxy A51 just recently. The only feature with a real upgrade would be the battery which is expected to feature a 4,500mAh cell.

If the Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite was expected to sell for $500, I wouldn't have any issues with it. In fact, I'd probably recommend it for someone who's looking for a new Android phone. Unfortunately, the rumors claim that the phone will make its debut for €679 which converts to $755. For those keeping track, that's $40 less than the Galaxy S10+ if you buy it directly from Samsung, but $55 more than what most other retailers are selling it for

Why would anyone buy this phone when Samsung's flagship offering costs roughly the same amount?

While the name of a phone is the least consequential aspect of a device, why would someone in their right mind consider buying a phone with the S10 name in January of 2020 when Samsung is expected to release the new S11 lineup in February? The phone may technically be in classified as a Galaxy S10 phone, but Samsung will likely treat it as a second-hand citizen. With a company that's always struggled releasing major Android updates, even for its flagship devices, the Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite would likely be relegated to the same update cycles bestowed upon its b-list devices.

Since the phone hasn't yet been unveiled, we're still not sure what Samsung's plan is for the Galaxy S10 Lite. It could turn out that the rumors regarding the phone's specs or its price could be wrong. If the phone has a lower price tag, I might actually change my mind about it. But for now, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite seems completely useless.

Facebook wants to reduce their reliance on Android, might build their own OS

It goes without saying that Android is the dominating operating system on mobile at the moment. It powers the majority of smartphones around the world and while there is plenty to love about Android, is it getting a bit too big for its britches? Perhaps, and so much so that Facebook apparently wants to move away from it.

In a report from The Information (paywall), it seems that Facebook is apparently developing their own operating system to try and reduce their dependence on Android. The development of Facebook's own OS is said to be led by Mark Lucovsky, a former Microsoft exec who helped co-author the Windows NT operating system back in the day.

That being said, it is unclear how Facebook's own OS will be used. As it stands, Facebook has apps on both iOS and Android devices, but its Oculus and Portal devices are powered by a modified version of Android. It has been suggested that maybe in the future, with Facebook's own OS, they can build hardware without having to rely on Android, which could also remove certain limitations and restrictions on what it can and cannot do.

Facebook's head of hardware, Andrew Bosworth told The Information:

"We really want to make sure the next generation has space for us. We don't think we can trust the marketplace or competitors to ensure that's the case. And so we're gonna do it ourselves."

Facebook's decision shouldn't really come as a surprise. The recent debacle involving Huawei and the US government shows how much it can affect a company and also how reliant many companies are on Google's operating system, so maybe it's not necessarily a bad thing to start creating alternatives.

New Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite specs and pricing leaked

We have been hearing rumors for the past couple of months that Samsung could have a budget version of the Samsung Galaxy S10 in the works known as the Galaxy S10 Lite. Now thanks to new leaks from WinFuture.de, it looks like some additional specs as well as potential pricing of the phone have leaked online.

According to the leaked specs, the Galaxy S10 Lite is expected to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset. This will apply to all regions that the phone will be launching in, a slight change in pace compared to the regular Galaxy S10 which was offered in both Qualcomm and Exynos variants.

It is also rumored to be offered with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, a 6.7-inch display with a resolution of 2400×1080, along with a 48MP primary camera with an aperture of f/2.0 with tilt-OIS technology. There will also be a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide lens, a 5MP f/2.4 macro lens that was introduced to the Galaxy A51 not too long ago.

Also, as per a previous rumor, the Galaxy S10 Lite could pack a 4,500mAh battery. It's interesting that this late into the year that the company is still planning a Galaxy S10 handset. WinFuture also claims that the phone could be priced at 679 euro which is roughly $755 after conversion.

Take it with a grain of salt for now, but Samsung is rumored to be launching the phone by the end of the year, so we should have all the official details soon enough.

Strand Hogg is Turning Android Phones Against User

A new security vulnerability was recently disclosed by Promon security experts. Dubbed StrandHogg, the vulerability is designed to exploit tens of malicious Android apps. The bug in the Android operating system works by allowing the malicious apps to hijack a legitimate app and then perform its malicious operations on their behalf.

According to Promon experts, the vulnerability can trick users unaware of permitting malicious apps when they tap and interact with the legitimate ones. The term StrandHogg is derived from an Old Norse term, which refers to a tactic adopted by the Vikings that raid coastal areas intending to plunder and hold people for ransom. You can prevent the bug from intruding by using the best VPN service provider to prevent hackers from stealing your information.

The StrandHogg vulnerability is also said to show fake login pages when one is taping on a legitimate application.

How StrandHogg Works

The StrandHogg vulnerability details are straightforward to understand even for non-techie users. StrandHogg is a bug in the way the Android Operating System handles switching between tasks that handle different applications or operations.

StrandHogg is a bug in the OS component that controls multitasking – the mechanism allows the Android operating system to run multiple processes all at once and switch between them when an app goes in or out of the user's view (screen).

An installed malicious app on an Android phone can easily exploit the StrandHogg vulnerability to trigger malicious code when the user starts another app – through a feature called "task parenting."

An innocent user normally taps on a legitimate app but executes code from a malicious one.  The code can further ask for intrusive permission or display phishing pages. Since the actions are prompted to occur after the icon touch, the user will believe the login screen or permissions were created by the legitimate app, instead of the malicious one. The user will proceed to interact with those elements without raising any suspicions.

Experts said this makes StrandHogg vulnerability attacks nearly impossible to detect, especially for Android users. Also, Promon experts noted that the attack from the bug does not require any root access to run. StrandHogg vulnerability functions on all Android operating systems, including the new release of Android 10.

Additionally, the Norwegian Company, Promon, tested the leading 500 best and mostly used Apps available on the Google play store and discovered that all apps processes could be hijacked to perform malicious attacks through StrandHogg vulnerability.

The Company researching team wasted no time by notifying the Android Project of the vulnerability in the multitasking component over the summer. Still, it's unfortunate even after Android OS developers were informed about the bug, and no action was taken.

For instance, in 2015, an academic team from Penn State University published similar research describing a theoretical attack about a task hijacking that can later be used for UI user monitoring, spoofing and denial of service.

Exploitation

Experts from Promon Company continue to reveal that, after their research, the new security flaw has already been exploited by malware e-criminals in the wild. The company learned of StrandHogg through Eastern European Security Company that the bug has already caused havoc in various quarters. For example, in the Czech Republic, money has been reported to disappear from customer's accounts.

According to Promon, it's after the Eastern European partners gave them a sample for its researchers to analyze where they discovered a security flaw caused by StrandHogg vulnerability.

Later, Promon Company partnered with Lookout, which confirmed the security flaw and realized 36 apps had been exploited. Promon did not list the 36 apps that the bug used but divulged further that none of the apps were available through the Play Store.

What happened is that the 36 apps were installed on user's gadgets as second stage payloads. First, the users installed other malicious apps from the Play Store, which later downloaded the StrandHogg apps that were already infected for intrusive attacks.

The StrandHogg vulnerability makes it easy for a malicious app to ask for permissions pretending to be a legitimate app. An attacker can request to have access to any permission, including photos, GPS, SMS, and microphone. When you do that as a user, they view your photos, eavesdrop, read messages, and then track your movement.

The attack can seem genuine to the user as it may come designed to ask permissions which wound naturally appear normal like different targeted apps make a request. That lowers the suspicion from the users and unaware grant the access to hackers without their idea thinking it's an official app they know. Today, for users to be safe from such undetected malicious attacks, they need to install Android VPN Apps to prevent getting their privacy accessed and used by e-criminals unaware.

Why StrandHogg is a Vicious Bug

The uniqueness of StrandHogg is the sophistication it has when attacking. The bug requires no device to be rooted; instead, it uses a weakness in the multitasking system of Android to enact powerful attacks that gives access to malicious apps masquerading as any other app on the gadget. After further investigation from Promon Company, they realized that all the Android top 500 most popular apps were at risk, and this affected all versions of Android devices, including the latest release.

Photos of Samsung’s second-gen foldable smartphone show off its design and features

The successor to this year's Samsung Galaxy Fold has been in the news quite a bit recently. While we're seen renders of the phone's design, a new leak has surfaced which finally gives real-world photos of the phone which show off its clamshell form factor.

Those who have seen the Motorola RAZR will immediately recognize the similarities between these two phones. Unlike the Samsung Galaxy Fold which opens up into a miniature tablet, this second-generation foldable display smartphone using the flexible display technology to fold a regular-sized smartphone in half, making it easier to tuck away in your pocket or purse.

The images were shared by Wang Ben Hong on Weibo, showing off five different images of the Samsung foldable smartphone from different angles. While the Motorola RAZR features a boxy and angular body with a pronounced chin at the bottom, the design of this phone is a lot more sleek and rounded. Samsung has equipped it with a hole-punch front-facing camera, dual rear cameras and a minuscule display on the outside for showing the time.

What we still don't know is if this new foldable display smartphone from Samsung will feature flagship specifications like the original Galaxy Fold. One report has claimed that Samsung's second foldable smartphone could be 50% cheaper than the original, implying that Samsung could take Motorola's approach and deliver a mid-range device so that the price point in much more appealing for the masses.

The Google Empire: How Has Their Fintech Technology Streamlined Home And Work Life?

As Google continues to rapidly gain popularity, the implementation of its algorithm and its smart home products have continued to revolutionize home and work life. But how could this be the next step for business? In this article, we will be looking into how Google and its Fintech technology is set to make the business world more streamlined than ever!

Plans For Online Banking

Though Google is one of the biggest tech giants in the world, the company is still planning to be bigger and better than ever before. With Google making its mark on online banking and other fintech technologies, many are beginning to question whether or not project cache could be the new start for fintech technology. With Google being used by thousands already this year, there is reason to suggest that their mobile banking can make business start-ups more accessible to the masses. With the connection of home devices to software on Google Drive and other Google Driven applications, smaller businesses can have access to work over the internet to achieve deadlines and maintain healthy growth of their business. Though this is only speculation at this time, Google could be the next best player in the online banking space.

The Integration Of Google Assistant

In addition to their progression into online banking, it is important to note that Google assistant has helped to change the way people interact with the internet and the way that content is absorbed. This has helped to streamline work and home life as Google Assistant has allowed for Google searches to be made quicker and easier than ever before using your voice. With Google Voice application already helping a number of small businesses up and down the country as well as the major success of Gmail and Google Hangouts, it has never been easier to keep a business connected and working efficiently.

Google voice has also revolutionized business by allowing workers to take calls on multiple devices through a Wi-fi connection. Though this does not work for everyone, this is something that can have a profound effect on the right amount

The Possibility Of Trading On The Go

Though it has helped start-up businesses with the integration of technology, Google has also revolutionized connectivity. Whether this is checking stocks on their Google Home devices or checking them on the go with a Google-enabled smartphone, this tech giant has revolutionized trading for the better making it accessible to the masses. Regardless of the type of trading that you are interested in, there is no denying that it definitely requires a lot of patience when it comes to making the most revenue. However, with the growing trend of swing trading, traders can not only receive a large return of investment but it also you to monitor investments without being on hand all the time. Google is helping to facilitate swing trading as well as other forms of trading through its Google platform as the dashboard provides a customizable notification system. This is of a benefit to swing traders as any alert will then be shown clearly on the phone or tablet.

Faster Internet Capabilities To Help Business

In addition to providing a stable platform for all Google searches, it is important to note that Google is trying to keep people on their profile for a much longer period of time. With sections for shopping, videos, flights and finance, you can have all the information that you need in one place. This not only helps to increase Google session time, but it helps to provide businesses with information as quickly as possible all in one place.

Though only time will tell when it comes to the implementation of Google in business, it is set to have big changes in 2020. Will you be using Google to help your business succeed.

Google Stadia finally supports existing Chromecast Ultras

Google Stadia was billed as a service that rids you of the need for powerful hardware. Instead, Google servers will power the games and you can play them on any display. Whether it's a TV, a computer, or even your phone, you can play your favorite games in 4K60 as long as you have a solid internet connection.

But as we all know, that's not how it worked out. At launch, Stadia only worked on the included Chromecast Ultra. No other Chromecasts were supported so you're stuck with one TV. If you wanted to play on a computer, you were limited to 1080p rather than the 4K60 you were paying for. And if you wanted to play on a phone, well you better have a supported Pixel phone. "Any display" really did turn out to be "just one, maybe two."

Most of this is still true, but thankfully Google has officially fixed one of those issues. The company announced via Twitter that support for your existing Chromecast Ultra is now enabled, meaning you can play across multiple displays with ease. This does not include standard Chromecasts or those built into your TV or media box, though they may be supported in the future.

Stadia is still light on features and many of the promised features are still missing, but they will come with time. Until then, enjoy being able to use your Stadia service on more than one TV!

Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G lands at the top of DXOMARK scoreboard

DXOMARK, the company that tests camera performance and gives it a score, has taken on the Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G. The standard Mate 30 Pro currently sits at the top of the scoreboard with a score of 121 (tied with the Xiaomi Mi CC9 Pro), but it looks like we have a new winner on our hands. The Mate 30 Pro 5G scored a whopping 123 points.

The funny thing is that the standard Mate 30 Pro and the 5G model have identical camera hardware. The two point differences comes down to software updates that Huawei has done since the launch of the regular device, meaning even the regular Mate 30 Pro would now score a 123 instead of a 121. It's typical to see image quality improvements with software updates, but it has brought this device out of a tie for the lead into a clear victory.

The improvements are mainly in the portrait mode, video quality, night mode, and especially zoom. However there's a slight decrease in ultrawide angle performance, as it's now less wide thanks to better anti distortion software. Losing some width is definitely an annoyance, especially since Huawei's ultrawide is already not as wide as the competition.

The end result is the best camera phone they have tested, and an amazing camera phone in general. It's just a shame we can't get it with the Play Store.

Google reveals the magic behind the Pixel 4’s amazing Portrait Mode

Google's Pixel phones are still quite new to the market, but the company has managed to make a name for itself by delivering incredible image quality despite using outdated, low-resolution imaging sensors.

While other companies have focused on increasing megapixel count ad sensor sizes in their flagship smartphones, the Pixel's camera team has essentially used the same 12MP sensor in its smartphones since the Pixel 2. This year, they did add a second sensor that's paired with a 2x zoom lens. The main benefit of the second sensor on the back of the Pixel 4 is being also be capture close up images of objects that are far away, but it's also helped the Pixel 4 deliver eve more impressive Portrait Mode images than it has in the past.

In a blog post, Google has pulled back the curtain, revealing how the data from the second sensor enhanced the depth calculations it was previously able to capture with a single dual-pixel sensor. Combining the two gives the Pixel 4 the ability to calculate depth based on pixel mapping variations vertically and horizontally. Once the data is processed using Google's Tensorflow in a convolutional neural network, the phone is able to more accurately distinguish foreground and background elements.

The Pixel camera team could have stopped there, but they decided that they also needed to enhance the bokeh effect for the blurred background. Previously, the blur effect was added after tone mapping was added from the original RAW image captured by the sensor. With the Pixel 4, the flipped the formula, adding the blur effect directly over the RAW image, before tone mapping is applied. The resulting images are more saturated while giving the bokeh disks higher contrast.

Having used the Pixel 4 as my main device since launch, I can say that I truly appreciate the work that Google has put into the phone's camera. The images it captures are second to none. That being said, I'm really hoping Google opts for a better imaging sensor and throws in an ultra-wide camera with next year's Pixel 5. If the Pixel 4 can stand out with mediocre camera hardware, just imagine what the Pixel 5 could do with new and improved sensors.

OnePlus Concept One to make its debut at CES 2020

Believe it or not, CES is right around the corner. While the world's biggest technology conference typically isn't as exciting as Mobile World Congress when it comes to smartphone announcements, there's typically at least one stands-out device that captures the imagination.

While OnePlus typically doesn't have a big presence at CES, the company has announced that it will be unveiling the OnePlus Concept One, a concept phone which will likely show off new innovations which may be present in its 2020 successor to the OnePlus 7 Pro.

OnePlus did not reveal any details about the device or the technologies it will be highlighting with it. Based on what we've seen recently from other manufacturers, chip makers and hardware suppliers, the OnePlus Concept One could be running the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC with the company's extra-large ultrasonic fingerprint sensor below its display.

The display itself could also be an upgrade over the QHD+ AMOLED panel we saw on the OnePlus 7 Pro which features a 90Hz refresh rate. Due to the close relationship OnePlus shares with Oppo, we could also see an in-display front-facing camera and even more advancements in fast charging.

The name itself, Concept One, is a clear promise that this device is only the first in a series to come and shows OnePlus' commitment to applied, innovative technology – bringing users an even smoother, faster, and more "burdenless" experience. The OnePlus Concept One demonstrates a vision of both new technology and an alternate design approach for the future of smartphones.

We're planning to have some quality hands-on time with the OnePlus Concept One at CES in less than a few weeks. As soon as we do, we'll be sure to share our experience with you.

What cool new tech do you want to see included in the OnePlus Concept One?

4 Fun Classic Online Games to Play Right Now

Online games are becoming more exciting, especially as technology advances. You can feel like you are right in the arcade without leaving the comfort of your home.

Whether you want to stream and play classic games or the latest ones to drop online, you can be at the front of the action. This is thanks to sites that are dedicated to entertainment games. If you want to participate in online games, here are a few of the most popular ones.

Popular Games Shows

Are you a huge fan of TV game shows? Like, a mega-fan that hopes to one day get on your favorite show? While you wait for that lucky day, there are plenty of popular TV game show slots online to play, bringing all the thrill and entertainment, like Deal or No Deal, Jeopardy!, and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? You can experience all of the challenges of a real game show — albeit in a different format.

Game shows are massively popular still, both on TV and even on mobile phones with games like HQ. So when you're not watching the latest episode — or trying to get on the show — why not relax with a casino variation to test your skills and see how well you perform when challenged? It'll be a great way to prepare for someday making it on the actual show.

Word Games

Do you love word games? There are plenty to choose from. For example, Word Wipe requires you to form words from assorted tiles. You can play by yourself, get friends to join in, or even join a community of online players.

Another popular word game is the outspell spelling game. It is designed specifically for word lovers. The premise of the game is similar to Scrabble, only with a few fun twists that will keep you entertained for hours. Choose your level of difficulty, and spell out your word with the supplied tiles. The computer will take the next turn, and you continue to build words from the remaining tiles. In case you get stuck, there is an online dictionary that can help you get inspiration for the next word. Not only is this online game fun, it is also an educational tool that can help you to build your vocabulary.

Card Games

There is no denying that card games are fun. This is the reason for their popularity. You can play everything online from bridge to Solitaire. Playing bridge online doesn't require you to have groups of partners. You can play by yourself, or create your own bridge team. You can find online bridge tournaments that have actual prizes or just play for fun. This applies to almost any of your favorite card games, including poker and rummy.

Hidden Object Games

Hidden object games are essentially a type of puzzle. Over the years, more and more people have discovered how fun these games are to play. There are often storylines that involve mysteries or lost love, too, making them even more exciting.

The scenes for these games are also realistic and help to draw the player in. You can travel the world searching for hidden items, all from the comfort of your home. Mystery Case Files is one of the popular hidden object games. In it, you get to search for clues from various crime scenes in an attempt to solve the mystery.

If mysteries aren't what you want, there are hidden object games based in a kitchen, a flower garden, or even in famous paintings. In a small way, you can feel like you are traveling the world with these games and you do not even have to leave your house.

Today's Online Games

Finding games to play online is easy. A simple search on your laptop or phone will bring up far more than a few sites. You will be able to find everything from poker and slots to old arcade favorites.

It doesn't take long to get started. All you need to do is to simply create an account for many of these sites. You don't even need to enter banking information. You can play your favorite games for free. You can meet new friends, online, with your same gaming interests. Have fun on your way home from work or just take a few minutes for yourself during the week. Online gaming is a great way for you to relax, and maybe connect with others, too.
