Smart replies is due to get a major update from Google. Instead of just suggesting replies, it will also suggest apps to open based on the context of the message. This could be maps for a location, calendar for an appointment, and more.
It's an awesome feature that's set to come to Android Q and will work system wide rather than being integrated only into Google apps, and it looks like it has finally begun to roll out to select users. Some people are reporting that they're already seeing the feature show up in various notifications, just as described.
This is likely a server side change so those who aren't seeing it can only wait and hope that Google will choose them next to experience this new feature. And of course you'll have to be running a beta of Android Q on supported devices to check it out, though if your phone is your daily driver, you may want to avoid it for stability. It is a beta after all.
More information on how it works and what apps and information it supports will come once it's more widespread and people give it a good test, so keep an eye out!
