When it comes to the MOBA game genre, there is a good chance that Riot Games' League of Legends comes to mind. The game has pretty much been an exclusive for computers, but if a recent report from Reuters is to be believed, they have been told by as many as three sources that a mobile version of the game could be in development.
There are already several popular MOBA games on mobile at the moment, such as Mobile Legends, Vainglory, and Honour of Kings. The latter of which was actually released by Tencent who owns Riot Games, the developer of League of Legends. It has been reported that the decision by Tencent to launch Honour of Kings strained the relationship between both companies, both of whom reportedly could not come to an agreement on how to best monetize League of Legends.
It is unclear as to what the mobile version of the game could be like, and whether or not it would be cross-platform compatible where mobile gamers could play with computer gamers, or if it would be a separate game only for mobile. The latter seems to be the more likely of the two, especially since such games can drag out for a while, meaning that the mobile title will most likely need to cut back on the number of players and the duration of a match.
League of Legends is reported to have made as much as $1.4 billion in revenue in 2018, but this is actually down by 21% compared to the previous year. Some analysts are suggesting that Riot needs a new way to monetize the game, especially since it is the studio's only title.
