Facebook is rolling out a new Facebook Messenger app on iOS today that will be coming to Android in the coming months. It's called Messenger Kids and it's designed to give parents more granular control over who their children can contact and be contacted by through Facebook Messenger. Facebook says it has worked with parents and organizations to determine the best approach to a messaging app for kids.
Once set up by parents, the app allows kids to contact anyone on the approved list with one-on-one conversations or group conversations, with the ability to set up cute masks and filters similar to Snapchat. There's also a library of kid-appropriate GIFs, frames, stickers, and drawing tools that let kids have fun in the app.
Anyone that has been added as a contact for kids will receive the messages in their regular Facebook Messenger app with no need to download a separate app. Facebook is testing the app on iOS only right now, but Android rollout is expected in the coming months.
