While the rest of the world is wondering what's going on with the Galaxy S9, Samsung has its eyes currently set on the mid-range market. Late last night, the company announced its latest offerings with the Galaxy A8 (2018) and Galaxy A8 Plus (2018).
These devices borrow a few of the best features from the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 devices – most notable the Infinity Display. Gone is the traditional 16:9 display, and now these devices feature a 5.6-inch and 6-inch display with an aspect ratio of 18.5:9.
As for specs, the smaller Galaxy A8 (2018) features a 5.6-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2220 x 1080. The device also features 4GB of RAM and either 32GB or 64GB of expandable storage. Finally, fast-charging returns to help keep your 3,000mAh battery powered up throughout the day.
When it comes to the Galaxy A8 Plus (2018, the device comes equipped with a larger 6-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display with the same resolution of 2220 x 1070. We are also seeing either 4GB or a bump to 6GB of RAM and either 32GB or 64GB of onboard storage. Finally, Samsung has packed a larger 3,500mAh battery into the Plus version of the A8 (2018).
There are a few specs that can be found on both devices, and those include the Samsung Exynos 7885 octa-core processor. We also have dual front-facing cameras on both devices, with a primary 16MP sensor and a secondary 8MP sensor. As for the rear camera, Samsung has included the same 16MP sensor in both devices, which includes an aperture of f/1.7.
Other than the inclusion of the Infinity Display with these devices, there is something rather interesting when looking at the rear of the device. Since the front-facing fingerprint scanner has been removed, it has been placed on the rear of the device, directly below the camera module. This matches up with some leaks that we have seen regarding the Galaxy S9, and could be Samsung's fix for the biggest issue with its 2017 flagship devices.
Samsung did not share specific pricing or availability information, but did state that these devices would be released in January. We are expecting to see Samsung announce these devices at CES 2018, so keep your eyes peeled for more information once it has been made available.
