For a long time, Huawei has provided the necessary telecommunications infrastructure to countries around the world. It was largely expected that they would continue to do so with 5G, but they ran into some roadblocks when the US government called on its allies not to do business with Huawei, citing potential national security issues.
It turns out that despite their calls and warnings, Germany does not seem too fazed about it. In fact, in a new set of rules for building 5G networks, Germany has decided not to ban Huawei's equipment. This does not mean that Huawei will land themselves a gig in Germany, but rather it means that they are welcome to submit their bids for any potential jobs in the country.
During a news conference held in Berlin on Monday, German government spokesman Steffen Seibert was quoted as saying:
"We are not taking a pre-emptive decision to ban any actor, or any company."
Germany had previously warned that by banning Huawei from doing business and providing the necessary equipment, it could result in the delay of the rollout of 5G networks by years, and could also end up costing billions of dollars. Huawei has long denied that they are spies for the Chinese government.
The company has also generously offered to license out their 5G technology and even the techniques behind it with US companies to prove that they have nothing to hide.
