The Google Pixel series has long focused on photography. Though the camera hardware is never all that good, Google's software wizardry continues to amaze. From the Night Sight night mode to the high detail digital zoom, Google's computational photography is simply insane and each smartphone in the lineup just gets better.
The Pixel 4 is the latest device in the Pixel line and has finally been scored by DxOMark. The device earned an overall score of 112, with a 117 in still photography and 101 in video. This puts it in 8th place, below the Galaxy S10+, OnePlus 7 Pro, Galaxy Note 10+, and the king of DxOMark the Huawei Mate 30 Pro (scoring a 131 in photos). Such a low position is a surprise!
The device rocks a regular wide angle lens and a 2x telephoto, defying the trend of triple cameras and ultrawide angle lenses. In DxOMark's scoring method, this drops the score of the device as it is less functional and practical thanks to these omissions.
Overall the Pixel 4 is praised for its prowess in both photography and videography, with highlights in portrait mode, digital zoom, and white balance. The device falters in noise levels and aliasing in some cases. The Mate 30 Pro consistently provided more detail as well. In video, the performance in 1080p mode was praised but the low light performance was not fantastic.
DxOMark isn't to be taken too seriously. This doesn't mean that the Pixel 4 camera is substantially behind others, especially if you don't take the missing ultrawide lens into account. It's better in some ways, and worse in others than its competition. But with mobile photography being so great, you can't go wrong with any of these devices.
