Uber and Alphabet-owned, Waymo, have been going back and forth for the better part of the last year Alphabet filed a lawsuit stating that Uber stole self-driving car secrets and more. The battle has yet to hit the courtroom, but part of that was due to the Department of Justice getting involved in the lawsuit.
The court case between these two companies was expected to get underway starting on December 4th, but was delayed after the DoJ intervened. The document provided by the DoJ, suggests that Uber has acted fairly shady, including the mention of a "hypothetical" situation where "two CEOs could meet covertly for a long period of time".
Not only were pieces of information shared in this letter, but the Department of Justice also confirmed that there is a criminal investigation into what Uber has done in the past when it comes to this situation. In addition to the situation mentioned above, Uber is also being accused of using "non-attributable electronic devices to store and transmit information that they wished to separate from Uber's official systems".
This means that whoever was taking place in these illegal and shady activities, were using things like burner phones to communicate and share information when the time arose. This made it possible to keep things "off the books" without leaving any type of paper trail or drawing suspicion.
The court case is expected to begin on February 5th, 2018, while the final pretrial conference has been set for January 30th, 2018. This case will be an interesting one to watch, but in the meantime, let us know what you think about the situation.
